Viagra Lawyers: Side Effects & Injury

Did You Know?

If you have taken Viagra and you have suffered from adverse side effects you may be entitled to compensation.

Viagra is the first oral pill to treat impotence, a dysfunction that affects millions of men in the United States. Viagra is manufactured by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. Unlike previously approved treatments for impotence, Viagra does not directly cause penile erections, but affects the response to sexual stimulation.

As reports about serious side effects continue to surface, critics point to the unusually quick drug approval process used by the FDA for Viagra. In the rushed 6 months between the submission of the new drug application and final FDA approval, the FDA's cardiovascular advisory committee was completely bypassed.

"Rarely, especially for a drug which is not for treatment of a life-threatening illness, does the FDA approve a drug which has not been reviewed by the appropriate FDA advisory committee." - Public Citizen .org

The FDA approved Viagra (sildenafil) on March 27, 1998 and by May 21, 1998 Pfizer had reported to FDA that it learned of the deaths of six people who had taken sildenafil.

Viagra, approved to treat erectile dysfunction, should not be used by men with heart conditions whose doctors have warned them not to have sex. Also, patients taking drugs that contain nitrates have been warned not to take Viagra because of sudden, unsafe drops in blood pressure.

The drug's label also warns of erections lasting longer than four hours, painful erections lasting longer than six hours, headache, flushed skin and vision problems.

Federal health officials are currently investigating reports of blindness in men taking Viagra. This type of blindness is called NAION, or non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. It can occur in men who are diabetic or have heart disease, the same conditions that can cause impotence and thus lead to Viagra use.

Additional side effects associated with Viagra include:

  • Headache

  • Flushing

  • Upset stomach

  • Stuffy nose

  • Urinary tract infection

  • Visual changes such as mild and temporary changes in blue/green colors or increased sensitivity to light.

  • Diarrhea

  • Viagra can cause a rare but serious condition of prolonged erection (priapism). It is important to contact your health care provider immediately if your erection lasts longer than 4 hours.

What is Viagra used for?

Viagra is used to treat impotence in men. Viagra increases the body’s ability to achieve and maintain an erection during sexual stimulation. Viagra does not protect you from getting sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

Who should not take Viagra?

  • Men who are currently using medicines that contain nitrates, such as nitroglycerin should not use Viagra because taken together they can lower the blood pressure too much.

  • Viagra should not be used by women or children.

Several groups of patients were not studied in the clinical trials for Viagra. The new labeling notes that if Viagra is prescribed for these patients, it should be done with caution. These include patients who:

  • suffered a heart attack, stroke, or life-threatening arrhythmia within the previous six months,

  • had significant hypotension (lowered blood pressure) or hypertension (uncontrolled high blood pressure of greater than 170/110),

  • had a history of cardiac failure or coronary artery disease causing unstable angina, and

  • had retinitis pigmentosa, an eye disorder.
